Response to the first announcement was encouraging and we are excited to present the Second Announcement and Call for Papers.

This announcement provides detailed information on the event and registration procedures. The pre-conference tour has attracted wide interest from participants wanting to experience the South African floricultural abundance and to learn more about the industry. Participation is limited and interested delegate are encouraged to reserve their seats on the coach as soon as possible.

This is also a Call for Papers and full authors’ instructions on the submission of abstracts and manuscripts and the preparation of oral & poster presentations are downloadable from our website and from  www.ishs.org/wri/pap1.htm

Our conference website www.ipa2008.co.za contains detailed information and allows for online submission of abstracts and registration.

PROGRAM

The Scientific Program (IPWG Symposium) will be structured to include invited presentations, oral & poster presentations and farm visits. The sessions will review the status and progress of aspects of protea research & management including:

An IPA Growers’ Day and Protea Expo themed Global Competitiveness & Marketing is planned for Saturday 6 September. This day is included in the Full Registration. Participants wishing to register for the Growers’ Day should note that the Conference Dinner is not included, but that additional registration is possible. PRESENTATIONS

Papers (keynote, oral or poster) presented at ISHS Symposia are published as proceedings in the Acta Horticulturae series. Participants planning to present an oral or poster are encouraged to submit an abstract using our on-line submission form. Abstracts not exceeding 250 - 300 words should be submitted by 30 November 2007 . Collated abstracts will be available as a Program Abstract booklet.

Stellenbosch Protea Hotel, http://www.proteahotels.com/protea-hotel-stellenbosch.html  is situated in the heart of the winelands, in one of the most beautiful and heritage-conscious towns in Southern Africa .  Stellenbosch, with its Mediterranean climate, scenic environment and well-maintained facilities, is the second-oldest town in South Africa and affectionately referred to as the "Town of Oaks ". http://www.stellenboschtourism.co.za

This 176-bedroomed hotel offers single and shared accommodation, on a bed and buffet breakfast rate. The hotel is only about 35 minutes away from Cape Town and 25 minutes from Cape Town International Airport . Flanked by two international class golf courses, it offers splendid views of fine vineyards, mountains and even in the far distance a glimpse of Table Mountain and the False Bay coast.

Group accommodation, at favourable rates, is available at the Protea Hotel if booked through the Secretariat. Delegates will be able to make their reservation on the registration form and together with the registration fee, make one single payment.  PRE-CONFERENCE TOUR

The Cape Floral Kingdom , smallest of the six plant kingdoms, contains the highest known concentration of plant species in the world. More than 9 000 species, including about 350 protea spp make up this biome of which roughly 70% is endemic. The pre-conference tour, travelling through this floral abundance during early spring, is aimed at showcasing the Western Cape protea industry in its wild as well as cultivated localities. South Africa produces half the world's cut-flower proteas, and the industry employs more than 20 000 people. (www.southafrica.info)

Tour participants should arrive in Cape Town on Friday 29 August as the tour departs at 08:00 on Saturday morning, 30 August and returns to the conference hotel in Stellenbosch on Tuesday,

2 September. Airport transfers can be arranged through the hotel (submit request on registration form) payable directly to the hotel (approx. R250 per person). Participants are invited to meet at 18:30 on Friday 29 September for the pre-conference tour registration and a welcome reception (venue to be confirmed with confirmation of tour reservations). Space on the pre-conference tour is limited and interested participants are encouraged to confirm their bookings with full payment as soon as possible, but before 31 January 2008 to qualify for Early Bird fee. Price: R 4 400 per person sharing and R 5 300 per single person. The fee includes travel in an air-conditioned coach, four nights’ accommodation, a welcome reception, all meals (except dinner at Hermanus), with soft drinks & bottled water provided on the coach. Preference will be given to participants prepared to share accommodation.
